| The goal of the "Keeping the Dream Alive" diversity
workshop is to foster greater sensitivity and awareness of the
Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, while promoting cultural diversity.
Under the aegis of America's Promise, the New Hampshire Cultural
Diversity Awareness Council hosts an Annual "Keeping the
Dream Alive" cultural diversity workshop at the Waterville
Valley Conference Center. The day-long program combines cultural
diversity training and skiing for up to 320 middle school
students.
Professional trainers representing several area corporations,
the military, law enforcement, and middle school teachers,
developed an innovative program geared to 12 through 15 year-old
students. A morning work session that focuses on learning about
cultural and heritage differences is presented. The morning
session is followed by a full lunch before skiing and other
outdoor activities.
Students learn problem-solving strategies and positive ways
to resolve conflicts with others, with the ultimate goal of
returning to school to share their experiences with their peers.
Students also learned about issues such as prejudice relating
to one's economic status, language, religion, and ethnic origin. |
